Confidence really is everything! Having confidence allows us to take chances, adventure into the unknown, meet new people, form healthy relationships, live independently and have faith in ourselves. Yet a growing number of people are reporting that they lack confidence. There are many explanations and contributing factors to this but there is some good news: it’s not that difficult to build confidence, although it is time-consuming.

At SXSW, AMC previewed the pilot episode of “Halt and Catch Fire,” an upcoming drama about a group of programmers trying to clone the IBM PC in Texas during the early 1980s. We definitely liked what we saw, but the show feels like the slow burn kind of drama that draws you in over the course of a few episodes.

Generation jitters: are we addicted to caffeine?

Generation jitters: are we addicted to caffeine? Caffeine is the drug many of us can’t live without – but do you have any idea how much is in your daily hit? Propped up on my desk before me, ...

Propped up on my desk before me, there is a vacuum-sealed bag of white powder. Chemists would recognise this substance as a methylated xanthine, composed of tiny crystalline structures. It is a drug, and I have been under its influence nearly every day for the past 25 years. It is caffeine, and in moderation it makes us feel good. But it is a drug whose strength is consistently underestimated. You’d need to down about 50 cups of coffee at once, or 200 cups of tea, to approach a lethal level of caffeination – but if you go straight for the powder, you can get a lot very quickly.

Masters 2014: final day live! Sunday’s final round in Augusta, as it happens Third round report: Watson reeled in by Spieth Official Masters leaderboard Email scott.murray@theguardian.com 10....

Adam Scott finishes this year as he did the last: by raking in a monster on 18! This one’s only for par, and a round of 72 that sees him finish +1. No Green Jacket for him this year, but he greets the audience with a huge smile, and he’s given the warmest of receptions in return. What a fine champion he’s been.

Bubba’s in the bunker at the back of 7. He’s got a pained look on his big red coupon. He’s started poorly, despite an eagle at 2, and he’s not in a chipper mood. This is a bit of a puzzle, coming out of the trap with the green sloping dramatically. He splashes out, but the ball runs through the green and off the other side, 25 feet from the pin. That was punishment for the second shot, rather than anything he did in the sand. But this is Augusta for you, they all know the rules.

The thrill of the grass, the roar of the crowd, it can mean only one thing! It’s baseball time in America and you’re bound to have to talk about it. Whether your home team is awesome or terrible, people on trains and elevators will make small talk about it and bar TVs will have a constant stream of it playing in the background. You might even lose a significant other to the game for the season.

I remember once when I was in elementary school, my mom let me shop by myself in Aeropostale, which of course made me feel really cool and sophisticated and independent. I picked out a few shirts (probably all plastered with felt letters spelling “Aeropostale,” because what else can you really buy there?) and headed to the dressing room, following two very hip, gorgeous teenage girls who I immediately admired for their middle-school wisdom. As I tried on my shirts, only really concerned with choosing the best shade of blue, I overheard their conversation in the stall next to me:
